I live in The Netherlands right now, and this country at least has privacy laws that mean something. But I do wonder for how long. It's no secret that here they monitor your communications, but they do not keep historical records of anything, as the watchdog organisation ensures they are not kept. I've seen this happen as a work place I wasn't was in was ordered to destroy personal records that violated the privacy laws. Unfortunately I do feel in the age of digital civilisation, privacy will become naught but a word in the online dictionaries. This is why encryption becomes so important. But that is another rant.
